The COMPASS team attended the 31st AAS/AIAA Virtual Space Flight Mechanics Meeting from 1st to 3rd February 2021. COMPASS members presented their latest developments in the fields of astrodynamics and orbital mechanics, with particular focus on mission design and trajectory optimization.

Satellite operators need increasingly powerful tools for collision avoidance manoeuvre (CAM) design, to deal with the growing number of objects in space. A recent open access publication by Juan Luis Gonzalo, Camilla Colombo, and Pierluigi Di Lizia proposes an analytical formulation for CAMs allowing to maximize deviation or minimize collision probability. On December 16, Francesca Letizia from the ESA Space Debris Office gave a seminar at PoliMi about the sustainability of the space environment and the importance of space situational awareness for current space activities and for future space exploitation.
Mirko Trisolini from COMPASS participated to the 5th International Space Debris Re-entry Workshop organised by ESA, presenting his work on the re-entry and disposal of GEO satellites on resonant trajectories.

In-person meetings have become a rare luxury due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That is why the International Astronautical Federation has made the 71st International Astronautical Congress – The CyberSpace Edition their first fully online congress. On 12-14 October more than 10,000 attendees joined all over the world to share the latest space developments. The COMPASS team contributed with 5 papers and videolectures.
