“A Salient Earth” is an art project by Sarah Ceravolo about the sustainability of space and particularly the space debris problem. A vivid colormap from our recent publications was used in the project.
A new journal article by Mirko Trisolini assesses the effects of hypervelocity space debris impacts on satellites through a geometrically based probabilistic approach.
The COMPASS team presented its research about “Sustainable Space for Smart Life” to students from Stendhal Elementary School in an interactive lecture aimed to inspire the young scientists of the future.
Kindly hosted by Dr. Brandon Jones and Dr. Ryan Russel, Camilla and Stefan gave a seminar at the University of Texas on 13 December. They presented the COMPASS project with a focus on space debris and its modelling.
Stefan and Camilla of the COMPASS group attended the first International Orbital Debris Conference (IOC) in Christmassy Sugarland, TX, USA. They presented the new tools their team developed for optimising collision avoidance manoeuvres and estimating the evolution and implications of on-orbit fragmentation clouds.
Check out the Inaugural Lecture for the Opening of the 157th Academic Year of Politecnico di Milano by Camilla Colombo on “Satellites and Space Debris: Services from Space in a more sustainable world”.
The COMPASS team attended the 70th International Astronautical Congress hosted at the Walter E. Convention Center in Washington, D.C., 21-25 October 2019. COMPASS members presented their latest developments in spacecraft trajectory optimisation, modelling and risk analysis for space debris, and orbital dynamics.
Camilla Colombo was selected to attend the Annual Meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum in Dalian, China as part of the delegation of the ERC.
Prof. Baojun Pang, from the Harbin Institute of Technology (China), visited Politecnico di Milano to meet the COMPASS group. He delivered a seminar on the space debris environment, showcasing the destructive power of space debris and recapping assistants on the latest updates of the Space Debris Environment Engineering Model (SDEEM 2019).
