ESA-funded project on robust trajectory design with uncertainties

A new ESA-funded project on robust trajectory design with uncertainties is kicking off! The cooperation between the COMPASS group at the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology and the European Space Agency on the fields of mission analysis on planetary protection and robust trajectory design continues, co-funding the PhD of Alessandro Masat at Politecnico di Milano under the supervision of Camilla Colombo and Arnaud Boutonnet.

This two-year research will focus on advancing the current orbital uncertainty propagation strategies, both on the astrodynamical and the computational sides, to ultimately enhance and improve the mission design phase. Two international conference proceedings have already been published:

  • Masat A., Romano M., Colombo C., Kustaanheimo-Stiefel variables to halve the cost of Monte Carlo planetary protection compliance analysis”, 8th ICATT (International Conference on Astrodynamics Tools and Techniques), virtual edition, 23-25 June 2021.
  • Masat A., Romano M., Colombo C., “Combined b-plane and Picard-Chebyshev approach for the continuous design of perturbed interplanetary resonant trajectories”, 31st AAS/AIAA Spaceflight Mechanics Meeting, Charlotte (NC), USA (virtual edition), 1-3 February 2021.
