COMPASS team at 9th Space Traffic Management Conference in Austin, TX

The COMPASS group participated in the 9th Space Traffic Management Conference organised by the University of Texas Austin in collaboration with the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), and held in Austin, Texas.

Our Ph.D. student Andrea presented our work on space sustainability entitled “Space environment investigation using a space debris index”, showing the influence of large constellations on the population of objects already in orbit.

The work focused on the study of large constellations, investigating their deployment phase and their location in terms of orbit altitude and inclination. The main results showed how a proper design of the constellation is essential to reduce the impact of these missions on current and future populations, especially regarding the possible fragmentation of satellites.
