On the 5th of June, our Andrea Muciaccia successfully defended his PhD thesis, “Environmental impact of space objects around the Earth for space sustainability analysis”, at @Politecnico di Milano to be awarded the doctoral degree in Aerospace Engineering.
His research, supervised by @camillacolombo from @Polimi and @mirkotrisolini from @vyoma, focused on the investigation and development of novel approaches for assessing the impact of mission on the space environment and the use of the space capacity concept. Main outcomes of his work are the improvement of already defined metrics, their extension to work in orbital regions outside LEO and for different mission architectures (e.g., satellite constellations), and the use of the space capacity concept to investigate in-orbit fragmentations.
The doctoral research has received funding from the European Space Agency’s contract 4000133981/21/D/KS and the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 101089265 – GREENSPECIES).
