In a space environment with an ever-growing satellite population, the latest paper by Eduardo Polli, Juan Luis Gonzalo and Camilla Colombo eases studies in the context of Space Situational Awareness, by developing an algorithm capable of assessing the average collision probability between an object subjected to continuous tangential thrust, and tens of thousands of constellations’ satellites, all within milli-seconds. Thanks to everyone who attended the Festival dell‘Ingegneria last weekend and visited the activities of the COMPASS group of the DAER of Politecnico di Milano! It was great to discuss with you the challenges of space sustainability, climate change and appreciate how Space is for Earth!
Our Ph.D. candidates Alessandro Masat and Marco Nugnes have been awarded two of the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana’s (ASI) scholarship to participate at the 73rd International Astronautical Congress (IAC22) in Paris and the Space Generation Congress (SGC2022) organised by the Space Generation Advisory Council.
Our Ph.D. candidate Francesca Scala has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to attend the congress as an ESA-sponsored student for the International Space Education Board’s (ISEB) Student Program at the 73rd International Astronautical Congress (IAC22) in Paris.
We are hiring! Two open positions within the COMPASS group on Mission Analysis. Apply by 31/08/2022 at these links: Mission analysis for the REMEC (Radiation Environment Monitor for Energetic Cosmic Rays) mission, Mission analysis of launch service for Fat in-orbit reaction.
The Politecnico di Milano is coordinator of the European CRADLE (Collecting Asteroid-Orbiting Samples) project.
The project, carried out in collaboration with JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Università degli Studi di Padova, and D-Orbit aims to investigate novel mission concepts for sample collection without having to land or touch down.
How can we study the evolution of particle ejecta around asteroids? Can we leverage their dynamics to collect them in orbit? Check out the latest work of Mirko Trisolini presented at the 32nd JAXA Symposium on Astrodynamics and Flight Mechanics. See the results here.
Camilla Colombo and Andrea Muciaccia from COMPASS group attended the ESA Space Debris Risk Assessment and Mitigation Analysis Workshop, held in Darmstadt, Germany on 23-24 June 2022. Camilla Colombo presented the ongoing work on risk assessment and mitigation activities at Politecnico di Milano.
The ESA’s Living Planet Symposium is one the biggest Earth observation conferences in the world, playing a fundamental role in advancing our understanding of how our planet works and how it is being affected by climate change. The COMPASS group participated to the Living Planet Symposium 2022, held in Bonn, Germany on 23–27 May 2022.
